Last call for ‘I’ll Have Another’

The racehorse who will go down in history for what could have been will lead the parade in advance of tonight’s running of the Belmont Stakes, but will be sidelined for the race due to an injury. NBC’s Jay Gray reports.

>>> horse racing fans are disappointed a day after kentucky derby and preakness winner i'll have another is scratched. it means for another year there will be no triple crown winner. nbc's jay gray is at belmont park . jay, good morning.

>> reporter: good morning to you. beautiful morning out here at belmont park , some of the horses taking their final trapg runs. noticeably missing from that group obviously is the favorite, i'll have another. it was after his lap around the oval yesterday morning that trainers noticed swelled in the left front leg. doctors described it as tendonitis. that was enough for the trainer doug o'neill to pull the horse from the race. now, it's not the role that so many hoped to see i'll have another on. the horse will be on and, in fact, it will lead the post parade before the belmont stakes .

>> obviously animal fans, horse fans want to know the long-term prognosis for i'll have another. what's the future for this horse?

>> if there's any good news, that is it, that the owner and trainer made safety number one. it won't be in time for the race here at belmont this evening.

>> all right, jay gray. thank you very much. by the way, coverage of the belmont stakes will be at 3:3 and catch the big race at 4:30 on nbc.
