Jimmy Buffett, wastin' away again at the TODAY Plaza

It just isn't summer without Jimmy Buffett — that's something both his loyal Parrothead fans and casual listeners who mainly know his big hit "Margaritaville" can agree on. Barefoot, Buffett popped up on the TODAY plaza Thursday to promote his new studio record, "Songs from St. Somewhere" and sing a few tunes, including classics "Margaritaville" and "Fins" and new songs "Somethin' 'Bout a Boat"

Somewhere" and sing a few tunes, including classics "Margaritaville" and "Fins" and new songs "Somethin' 'Bout a Boat" and "Too Drunk to Karaoke." And he took a few minutes out from playing to explain that last title a bit more.

"I have been in that predicament myself," Buffett said about "Too Drunk," adding, "and it was my own song!"

He mentioned that he's been "on vacation" for a while, but is now hitting the road again, and noted that he's producing a Broadway show, "Big Fish," based on the 2003 movie.

And it turns out, he runs into Matt Lauer every so often when he's not on the road: "I see you in your boat occasionally," he told him, but made sure to add, "My boat's bigger than his boat."

So there is competition, even in the laid-back world of Jimmy Buffett.
