Today, the Twitter app for iOS and Android received a small tweak, with the biggest change coming to how users communicate via direct message (DM).

Photos can now be sent back and forth via direct message on your phone, which should help Twitter compete with photo-sharing apps like Snapchat, which are meant for sharing private moments instead of displaying them in public. (Take note, Anthony Weiner).

The Twitter app also got an upgrade when it comes to switching feeds, Jeremy Gordon, the company's senior director of product engineering, wrote in a blog post. Now, moving from the Home timeline to the Discover timeline to the Activity timeline is a simple matter of swiping left or right. That should make it easier to track trends on Twitter, as well as keep up-to-date on who is favoriting and retweeting your brilliant 140-word insights.

There are also a few new added features depending on which operating system you use. Android users will get the ability to receive notifications for actions from specific users by simply tapping the star on their profile, while iOS users will see new in-app notifications whenever someone interacts with one of their tweets or sends them a direct message.

Twitter's mobile app also got a minor update in August, when the company added a feature that connected replies with a blue line, making it easier to keep track of conversations.
