As the GOP heads to South Carolina for the Jan. 21 Republican primary, the incumbent Obamas quietly added another weapon to their re-election arsenal: the first lady is now on Twitter.

The first — of so far, only two — messages came out this morning: "We're excited today to launch @michelleobama as a new way for you to connect with First Lady Michelle Obama and the President's campaign."

And the second tweet tells us to look out for the "-mo" signature to differentiate the first lady's messages from the campaign staff's.

Twitter / Today

In two hours, she's already amassed more than 28,500 followers but that's a long way from one of the five her account is following: her husband, President Barack Obama, who has 11.8 million followers. Or, the White House, which has about 2.6 million. (Update: 5 hours after the first tweet from the account, she now has more than 116,000 followers.)

UPDATE: She sent her first tweet. Read it below:

While it's the first lady's first foray into Twitter, she's already on Facebook, where she has about 6.3 million subscribers. (Again, her husband is quite popular on there already, with 24.4 million subscribed — the most in the field of Presidential hopefuls.)
