Marriage proposals are getting to be a tricky business — now that we've got social media, everyone's trying to top everyone else's creative approach to popping the question. So what do you do when ideas like using StumbleUpon or fake Android apps to propose are old news?

You reach for the light-up pens and cameras.

At least that's what James Veluya, a senior designer at digital agency Free Association, did when he decided to ask his girlfriend Julie to marry him.

Veluya made a batch of LED light-up pens using instructions he found online, gathered up his friends and family members, and created a proposal video — which you can see below — over the course of nine months. (Give the guy a break — those pens take a while to build and he only recorded video on a few weekends.)

Once the video was done, the actual proposal was arranged. According to Veluya, it took place in a small theater in Brooklyn, New York where he (and all the folks who helped make the video) surprised his now-fiancée. (Of course she said yes — or else you probably wouldn't be hearing about the proposal.)
