Maybe social networking fatigue is getting to me, but for some reason it wouldn't have even surprised me if something like Google-, the anti-social network described in this video spoof, actually existed.
While the imaginary network's name is a play on Google+ and primarily mocks the newest addition to the Internet, it does take a few jabs at everything from Facebook to YouTube as well. This makes sense since author and videblogger Robyn Schneider created the video because she — like many others — is frustrated with social networks in general:
I think social networking sites are ridiculous, and I never know what to do when I get there, except deny friend requests from random creepers, get quietly p-----d off at my friends for adding me to events that send out constant reminders, and puzzle over wall posts that are supposedly from people I know, although I swear to God, I have no idea who these people are.
As someone who contemplates quitting every social network at least once an hour, I understand Robyn's complaints. But on the other hand, I have also seen how powerful a simple social media campaign can be and how the Internet can occasionally bring out the best in people.
That's what's keeping me online for now — but the day those reasons cease to exist, I'm learning to code and building a real version of Google-. And then I'm inviting Robyn to make another video.
