Sephora’s Beauty Insider Loyalty program is one of the best rewards programs out there. As an "insider," every dollar you spend will earn a point, which can be redeemed for products, samples, trips and gifts.

This week, Business Insider reported a change to the points earned by members. Regardless of your membership status — Beauty Insider, VIB or VIB Rouge — points in your rewards bank now have a expiration date for the first time. The horror!

This policy change comes as a shock to many loyal Sephora customers.

Since it’s inception in 2012, Sephora Beauty Insiders could earn points with out fear of them disappearing, but according to Sephora’s updated terms and conditions, that has now changed.

“All unredeemed points shall expire when a program member has not engaged in point activity associated with that membership account (through purchase or redemption) for 18 months or more," the beauty giant’s site reads.

Let’s just say members of the loyalty program we’re less than happy with what they called a disloyal move.

Before you grab your pitchfork and declare that you’re leaving Sephora behind, it’s important to realize that, like with any good mass outrage, there is a level of misunderstanding here.

Yes, Beauty Insider points now have an 18-month expiration date, but they don’t automatically expire. According to the terms and conditions, points only expire “when a program member has not engaged in point activity associated with that membership account (through purchase or redemption) for 18 months or more.”

Meaning that if you make a purchase, redeem some points or even just log in to get your free birthday gift, your points are safe.

Sephora shared the following statement with TODAY Style:

To best serve our current and future Sephora Beauty Insider clients, we've recently updated our Terms and Conditions regarding inactive accounts. We regret any confusion caused, this change only affects Beauty Insider accounts that are completely inactive for 18 months [as of December 30th 2017], at which time points will be marked expired. Any Beauty Insider can keep their account active in a few easy ways, such as redeeming a Beauty Insider reward of any value, claiming your free Birthday Gift annually, or making a purchase with your Beauty Insider account profile. At Sephora, our goal is to provide the most compelling prestige beauty reward program, ensuring all program perks continue to surprise and delight. For more information, and to ensure your account information is accurate and up to date, please visit client.service@sephora.com or call 1-877-SEPHORA.

So beauty fans, rest assured, barring some kind of freak accident where you no longer like to receive free things on your birthday, the expiration date on your Beauty Insider points won’t be an issue.
