"I think I'm finally probably at the stage of my life where I trust what I put on and I feel comfortable and confident in it."

It's hard to believe that Olivia Newton-John, the four-time Grammy award winning singer best known for her starring role in the movie-musical "Grease," is 68. She sat down with TODAY to discuss her confidence, style and the way both have transformed over the years.

I have an incredibly interesting life. I have a wonderful husband, daughter, friends and family. I have a very fulfilling career. I have work that I’m passionate about, helping to fundraise and support medical research at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute. And I have my music, too. I’m doing a musical reading right now.

It's a wonderful life, and a balanced one at that. But it was only recently that I finally arrived at the stage of knowing that, and of having pure confidence.

It's only now in my life that I trust what I put on each morning and feel comfortable and confident in it. My style, like my confidence, has evolved.

In fact, when I look back at some of the pictures from years ago, I question my style. But that’s OK. That was then, and this is now. The way I see it, in every era of life, your body changes. And you have to try and enjoy all the new things at every stage you're at, during every stage of life.

Confidence, I've come to believe, is an "inner knowingness."

When I was younger, I didn't have that. I was quite nervous when I was performing, and not completely secure in who I was as a person. That's changed.

Now, I adore every opportunity to show my true self through my style. I find that easiest to do with scarves. I love them. Mainly because I’m a singer and I need to keep my neck warm, but also because you can completely change the look of an outfit just by adding one.

To me, "wear what you want" means, first and foremost, that you need to wear what makes you feel good, what makes you feel comfortable. What makes you look the best, for you, and not for anyone else. Something that suits your particular body, and not just what's in fashion.

As told to TODAY's Rebekah Lowin.
