Step aside, supermodels: These dogs are fashion's newest stars

We're all about body acceptance, but lately we've noticed the models in our fashion magazines are a little, well, furrier than usual.

Four-legged fashion stars have been replacing supermodels in high-profile campaigns from brands such as Coach, which features Lady Gaga's French bulldog Asia in its recent ads.

There's also the adorable Karen Walker campaign featuring Toast, who belongs to comedian Josh Ostrovsky, known online as The Fat Jew.

Both Toast and Asia are so popular they even have their own Instagram accounts — each with well over 100,000 followers.

While the animals-in-ads trend appears to be picking up steam, it's not exactly new: Cartier has famously used panthers in its campaigns for years, rescue dogs got a chance at the spotlight in a Ralph Lauren campaign from 2013, and top model Cara Delevingne posed with owls for Mulberry. Mulberry was back at it this summer with another photo shoot featuring dogs.

Last year, an adorable Jack Russell terrier snuggled alongside model Alexa Chung in an ad campaign for Longchamp, and even Kate Moss has shared the spotlight with a border collie for Burberry.

And when it comes to famous animals, who can forget Karl Lagerfeld's beloved Choupette? The sassy, spoiled Siamese cat landed a modeling gig with the luxury beauty brand Shu Uemura last year, in addition to various other brand endorsements and editorial photo shoots.

Laurie Brucker, a fashion stylist in Los Angeles, told TODAY.com that the "chic and stylish pet is on the rise," and flaunting them is an easy way for celebrities to get more buzz.

In an age when everyone's pet has a social media presence — yes, even Brucker's cat has an Instagram page — and Grumpy Cat and Lil Bub are household names, maybe it's no wonder our furry friends are appearing in fashion ads, too.

"Everyone loves cute and photogenic animals, so why not?" Brucker said.
