On Wednesday, a pair of green slippers with pink stripes that have presumably graced the feet of beheaded French Queen Marie Antoinette have sold for $81,275 at the Paris Drouot auction house.
The shoes were part of the auction house’s “Historic memories of Royal Families” sale, and were only expected to fetch between $8,000 and $13,000. The Daily Telegraph reports that the shoes were sold to a telephone bidder, who will also receive a certificate of authenticity.
According to the Associated Press, Antoinette was given the pair of size six shoes in 1775 by Alexandre-Bernard Ju-Des-Rets, a member of her court. Another pair of shoes believed to also have been worn by Antoinette sold for $57,000 at a French auction earlier this year.
Yowza! Looks like there are some serious Antoinette fans out there.
