People magazine has named actress Kerry Washington as the “World’s Best Dressed Woman" in 2013.
The “Scandal” star topped the annual "Best Dressed" list that included fellow actresses Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone and new mom Jenna Dewan-Tatum, the magazine announced Wednesday.
"I don't wear a lot of pants,” Washington, 36, said in a statement to People, distinguishing herself from the “Scandal” character she plays, Olivia Pope, the political fixer who favors power suits.
"When I go somewhere, I want to know I'm going to be comfortable and I'm dressed appropriately for the event,” she said. “You’re not going to dress the same way at the inaugural ball as you would at the MTV Movie Awards.”
It’s the second such title for Washington, who topped the Vanity Fair best dressed list in July. People noted Washington’s ability to combine classic style with modern trends in its piece of trendsetters and style icons, available on newsstands Sept. 20.
“She’s had so many opportunities for us to see amazing looks over and over and over again,” People style and beauty editor Pamela Edwards Christiani said Wednesday on TODAY. “We look for consistency and for 'wow' and for memorable style moments, and Kerry just delivered through and through.”
In 2012, actress Gwyneth Paltrow was named People's best dressed star.
Chastain captured the magazine's "best red carpet style" category. The 36-year-old Oscar nominee "personifies what it means to be a modern movie star," said Bergdorf Goodman senior vice president Linda Fargo.
Meanwhile, Emma Stone earned the “best classic style” badge for her ability to take timeless trends and give them an edgy update. Kate Spade creative director Deborah Lloyd noted Stone, 24, reflects a look that is “young and fresh but with a classic twist.”
“She’s chic, but always surprising,” she said.
Actress Jenna Dewan-Tatum, wife of "Magic Mike" star Channing Tatum, made it on the list for the "put together, tailored and incredibly on trend" maternity wear she sported while pregnant with her first child. She and husband Channing Tatum welcomed their child this summer.
"She basically wore things that we would wear whether we’re pregnant or not and she looked fantastic," Edwards Christiani said.
Among males, the suit-and-tie look favored by Justin Timberlake makes him the “perfect example of masculine fashion," People said, which placed the actor-musician on the top of the best dressed list for men.
“His clean, parted hair adds an air of class and elegance to all of his looks, while his 5 o’clock shadow brings a masculine touch to even the sharpest of tuxedos,” the magazine said. “From sport coat and fedora to button down and cardigan, Justin has mastered combining understated patterns and textures for a modern take on the classic suit and tie.”
