Jessica Mooney just can’t seem to be herself.
Every weekday for the past three years, the Minnesota woman has outfitted herself in a different costume. What started as an entertaining way to show off the items in her closet to friends eventually developed into an alter ego called “Dressy Jessie.”
More than 800 creative costumes later, Dressy Jessie has developed a fan base that keeps Mooney going. She has a Facebook page with more than 4,000 likes that says, "In her world, it's Halloween every day.''
“I think it’s really weird. I can’t believe I’ve done it for this long, but it’s just fun,” she told TODAY’s Savannah Guthrie on Wednesday.
Mooney comes up with characters to fit into new themes she creates each week. On Monday, she kicked off "New York Week" by dressing up as the Statue of Liberty. She wore an NBC page uniform Wednesday for her interview with Guthrie.
“I would have thought I would run out of ideas. I certainly didn’t mean to do it for this long, but the ideas come from everywhere," she said.
Last week, Mooney dressed up as journalists real and imaginary, including iconic news anchor Walter Cronkite, Saturday Night Live’s Roseanne Roseannadanna, and Ron Burgundy from the movie “Anchorman.”
Other characters she’s dressed up as include Mr. Clean, Ronald McDonald, Marilyn Manson, and Pebbles Flintstone.
Her favorite character, however, was “Resusci Annie,” the training mannequin used to teach people how to perform CPR. Mooney acknowledged it was “totally creepy,” but loved how the photo turned out.
Mooney gets into her costumes at her office at the University of Minnesota. She does it on personal time and with the blessing of her supervisor. Most of her materials are kept in her office in file drawers full of wigs, eyeglasses, makeup, costumes and miscellaneous fabric.
"Now files are digital, so I don’t need all those file drawers for paper anyway,” she said.
