Dream dresses: Our Oscar gown picks

Celebrities’ red carpet picks are the work of many a stylist and luxury designer, but if we had it our way, we’d choose a few natural fits (and unexpected styles) for Hollywood’s greatest. With the Oscars right around the corner, here are the designer dresses we’d green light for the night’s celebrated nominees:

Celebrities’ red carpet picks are the work of many a stylist and luxury designer, but if we had it our way, we’d choose a few natural fits (and unexpected styles) for Hollywood’s greatest. With the Oscars right around the corner, here are the gowns we’d green light for the night’s celebrated nominees:

    Julia Roberts

"August: Osage County" nominee Julia Roberts took some heat for her Golden Globes fashion choice, which consisted of a black strapless Dolce & Gabbana dress paired with a white shirt. The time around, we suggest something soft, feminine and flirty: a peachy, romantic gown by Zac Posen.

    Jennifer Lawrence -

“American Hustle” star Jennifer Lawrence will likely stick to Dior while she represents the luxury brand, and so far, she's had hits and viral-meme inducing misses. Also, a lot of poof. We wouldn’t mind if she opted for a sleek, sexy no-fuss style this time, courtesy of Kaufman Franco. Doritos dust optional.

    Lupita Nyong'o -

Lupita Nyong'o, star of “12 Years a Slave,” has quickly risen to red carpet superstar. She wowed fashionistas with her Ralph Lauren cape getup at the Golden Globes, and has continuously shown she can take a style risk. This sleek, moody print gown by Bibhu Mohapatra seems like the perfect fit.

    Cate Blanchett -

It’s hard to pull off severe looks, but Cate Blanchett always makes it look effortless. The “Blue Jasmine” nominee repeatedly pushes fashion boundaries, which is why she could easily spin her web around this full-length Marchesa gown.

    Sally Hawkins -

“Blue Jasmine” nominee Sally Hawkins has a penchant for playful fashion, which is why we think this Honor spring 2014 gown hits just the right balance between fun and black tie (or more like, black collar).

    June Squibb -

June Squibb plays a bitter (but hysterical) mom in “Nebraska,” but in real life, she’s as sweet as Midwestern pie. The veteran actress has some gumption and isn’t afraid to show personality on the red carpet, so might we suggest something colorful and slightly mysterious? Elie Saab has her covered.

    Amy Adams -

If it ain’t broke, why fix it? Amy Adams has become quite comfortable with low-cut styles (see: all of “American Hustle”), and who are we to mess with sexy sartorial perfection? Zuhair Murad’s spring collection show just enough skin, while still retaining a chic, sophisticated feel. Besides, how great would our gal Amy look in peach?

    Karen O -

Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is nominated for Best Original Song and we can’t wait to see her art-girl-meets-rocker style at the Oscars. Should the “Her” contributor want to wear something alternative and unique (yet still event-appropriate), this dramatic Vionnet dress would make quite the sweeping entrance.

    Meryl Streep -

Yes, Meryl Streep is thanked by everyone on awards night – getting more shout-outs than the higher powers. So shouldn’t she just dress like the goddess she is? The “August: Osage County” matriarch would look ethereal in this flowing, bejeweled number by Valentino.

    Judi Dench -

Dame Judi Dench generally adds a touch of the bohemian to her Hollywood appearances, veering towards caftans, scarves and oversized coats. The “Philomena” actress commands the red carpet no matter the outfit, but a sophisticated, fitted Elie Saab could be an interesting change of pace.

    Sandra Bullock -

“Gravity” nominee Sandra Bullock has sported a few structured (though beautiful) gowns of late. She always looks great, but we’d like to see her take a page out of Duchess Kate’s handbook and don a romantic dress by Jenny Packham. She certainly didn’t have enough ruffles in space.

    Julie Delpy -

Julie Delpy, nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, is still the quintessential French girl, even if we last saw her squabbling on the streets of Greece in “Before Midnight.” This bold-colored, asymmetrical Marchesa dress, a departure from the full-length gowns that populate the red carpet, boasts a certain je ne sais quoi.

    Giuliana Rancic -

Giuliana Rancic isn't nominated for anything, but you'll sure be seeing a lot of the E! host on the red carpet. How sexy would this flowing J. Mendel gown look?
