It was a tough night at the men’s free skate competition in Sochi, with no American getting close to the medal stand.

Olympian Jason Brown, 19, finished ninth while Jeremy Abbott placed 12th, after having to amend his routine following an injury.

"I wanted to go out and put out my best performance that I could," Brown said, but admitted, "it was a little disappointing." A dynamic skater whose routines have previously gone viral on YouTube, he said that even though he didn't win a medal, he was out there having a blast.

Fellow skater Abbott had to scale back his routine at the last minute due to an injury. He told TODAY's Lester Holt that he was in "excruciating" pain, with his muscles seized up from his hip to his shoulder.

Even with the pain and disappointment, both skaters said they will continue to move on — and up.

"I really feel like the possibilities are endless in the future," Brown said.
