In their first public engagement as a married couple, William and Kate shine as they arrive at a gala charity dinner to raise money for children at Kensington Palace on June 9.

Military wife

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge meet with and hand out medals to members of an Irish Guards Regiment that recently returned from Afghanistan. It was Kate's first military role as a royal and in a navy dress with gold buttons, she certainly looked the part.

During their visit to Canada, William and Kate tour an area in Slave Lake, Alberta that was devastated by fire. The couple started off their tour in Ottawa, joining millions of Canadians marking the country's 144th birthday.

Brimming with joy

William and Kate get a 10-gallon welcome on their visit to the Calgary Stampede, during their tour of Canada in July. Like royal visitors before them, the couple were given the traditional hats, which symbolize its roots as a frontier city. "Canada has far surpassed all that we were promised. Our promise to Canada is that we shall return," William told the cheering crowds.

On the last stop of their North America tour, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge dazzled Hollywood. At the BAFTA Brits to Watch gala they were joined by actors including Tom Hanks, Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Lopez.

The newlyweds work together to create clay hand prints at L.A.'s Inner City Arts center on the last day of their tour. Kate has a strong interest in the arts, and is patron of an art therapy charity as well as the U.K.'s National Gallery.

The other royal wedding

William and Kate weren't the only royals to wed in 2011. In July, the newlyweds attended the wedding of William's first cousin, Zara Phillips, daughter of Princess Anne, who wed rugby player Mike Tindall on July 30 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

British Royals Attend Christmas Day Service At Sandringham

Christmas with the in-laws

Christmas is a family affair in the royal family, with everyone celebrating together at the queen's home in Sandringham. Here, William and Kate, together with Prince Harry, Prince Charles and Camilla, walk to Sandringham Church for the traditional Christmas Day service. But one absence marked the festivities - the Duke of Edinburgh spent the holidays in the hospital, recovering from heart surgery.

Royal meet-up

William and Kate meet Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark on Nov. 2, during a one-day visit on behalf of UNICEF. Wearing hardhats, the royals inspect a UNICEF warehouse in Copenhagen that stores emergency food and medical supplies for East Africa. While there, Kate refused a taste of a special high-protein peanut paste, prompting harried speculation that she was pregnant.

Birthday date

On January 9, William and Kate arrive in the rain for the London premiere of the Steven Spielberg film "War Horse" in London, the night before Kate's 30th birthday. The duchess was reportedly moved to tears by the film, and was handed tissues by Spielberg's wife.

Romantic walks

William and Kate take a walk on the beach in Wales, joined by their new cocker spaniel puppy, Lupo, just after Kate's 30th birthday in January. The pup was born to Kate's parents' dog and the newlyweds adopted him around Christmas.
