In a first for the elder royal son, Prince William took on his first formal knighthood ceremony filling in for Queen Elizabeth II Oct. 17, 2013 at Buckingham Palace, London. He dubbed his first knight — Sir Kenneth Gibson, honored for his work in education — by taking King George VI’s sword from an attendant and carefully tapping a kneeling Gibson on each shoulder. He then went on to dub 87 more recipients.

In September, 2013, Prince William teamed up with retired soccer player David Beckham and retired basketball player Yao Ming to tape public service announcements against the illegal trade of wildlife products — specifically, rhino horn and elephant ivory. A group of competitors preparing for an ultramarathon in Wales received a surprise on Friday when the Duchess of Cambridge, 31, made her first public appearance since the birth of Prince George. Kate joined her husband, Prince William, to ceremonially start a round of the Ring O’Fire Ultramarathon on the island of Anglesey, where the royal couple lived at the time on August 30, 2013.

Photographer Ian Pelham-Turner, who has has spent four decades working with royalty, took pictures of the royal family in 1982, but only recently learned about the whereabouts of the forgotten images.

The photographer who took the first images of Prince William as a baby has just discovered several unseen shots of the Prince lost nearly 30 years ago. Ian Pelham-Turner, who ironically now has studios opposite Kensington Palace, took the baby pictures in 1982.

"I got a random phone call a few days ago and found out that in the region of 100,000 pictures had been discovered in boxes in an old building near the London Wall. It appears that they had been left by former agents of mine," he said in a press release. "When I opened the first box the images of Diana were the first to come out – just days before Prince William’s wedding."
