Catwalk queens: Supermodels of the '90s

The ‘90s ushered in the era of the “supermodel,” when catwalk stars became some of the most recognizable faces around the world. In honor of New York Fashion Week Spring 2014 (Sept. 5-12), take a look some of the most famous ladies of that decade, who forever changed the modeling industry with their runway walks and superstar status.

Cindy Crawford

Age: 47, height: 5’9”, origin: DeKalb, Ill.

Crawford hit the modeling scene in the late ‘80s and soon became one of the most famous faces of the ‘90s, appearing on hundreds of catwalks and magazine covers throughout the decade. Crawford, with her trademark mole, became a household name when she starred in a memorable Pepsi commercial that aired during the Super Bowl in 1991.

In 1998, she wed former model Rande Gerber, and the couple has two children together. While Crawford stopped modeling full-time in 2000, she did appear on the cover of Vogue Mexico in 2011.

Amber Valletta

Age: 39, height: 5’ 8”, origin: Phoenix, Ariz.

Valletta became a magazine cover girl in her teens, and began posing in Giorgio Armani and Calvin Klein advertising campaigns at the age of 19. In 1995, she became the face of fashion houses Gucci and Versace. She has since made a transition to acting, with memorable roles in “Hitch” and the television series “Revenge.”

Christy Turlington

Age: 44, height: 5’10”, origin: Walnut Creek, Calif.

Discovered as a young teenager, Turlington has appeared on over 500 magazine covers and represented Calvin Klein for two decades. Since her time on the catwalk, the green-eyed beauty has dedicated herself to several philanthropic groups and studied Eastern philosophy. She married actor Edward Burns in 2003, and the couple has two children.

Claudia Schiffer

Age: 43, height: 5’ 11”, origin: Rheinberg, Germany

Schiffer started modeling at the age of 17, and her Bridget Bardot-esque looks have been featured on many a magazine cover and in dozens of high profile fashion campaigns ever since.

She was engaged to magician David Copperfield for five years, until the high-profile couple broke up in 1999. Three years later, she married film director Matthew Vaughn, with whom she has three children.

Helena Christensen

Age: 44, height: 5’ 10”, origin: Copenhagen, Denmark

After taking the Miss Denmark crown in 1986, Christensen went on to have a successful modeling career, appearing in Victoria’s Secret catalogues and commercials as an Angel. She expanded her role in the fashion world as the creative director of Nylon magazine in the late ‘90s and launched her own clothing line.

Christensen still models for magazines, and, in 2012, collaborated with lingerie brand Triumph to create a collection of her own. She posed in her own designs for the Triumph ad campaign.

Karen Mulder

Age: 43, height: 5’ 10”, origin: Vlaardingen, the Netherlands

Blonde-haired beauty Karen Mulder walked the runway for Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, Giorgio Armani and many more famous fashion houses throughout her career, alongside fellow supermodels Kate Moss, Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer.

Suffering from depression, she overdosed on sleeping pills in 2002 and fell into a two-day-long coma. She has since recovered from depression and returned to the catwalk in July 2007, appearing alongside Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Helena Christensen in a Dior show. Since then, Mulder has kept a relatively low profile.

Supermodel Kate Moss wears a multicolor

Kate Moss

Age: 39, height: 5’ 7”, origin: Croydon, United Kingdom

Famous for her waifish figure and grunge style, Moss became one of the world’s most recognizable models after appearing in a Calvin Klein Jeans campaign in 1993. She was featured in several major fashion campaigns during the ‘90s and worked with the most famous photographers of the day. After undergoing treatment for drug addiction in 2005, she designed a collection for Topshop and continues to model in print and on the runway.

Moss dated actor Johnny Depp from 1994 to 1998 and rocker Pete Doherty before marrying guitarist Jamie Hince in 2011. In 2007, she came in second on Forbes' top-earning models list, just behind Gisele Bundchen.

Linda Evangelista

Age: 48, height: 5’ 9”, origin: St. Catharines, Canada

Featured on hundreds of magazine covers throughout her career, Evangelista got her start working with fashion photographers Peter Lindbergh and Steven Meisel. She sported her signature short crop on the runway for all the top fashion houses of the day and famously uttered the phrase, “We don’t wake up for less than $10,000 a day,” to Vogue magazine in 1990.

Once married to Elite model agency executive Gerald Marie, Evangelista filed court papers in 2011 revealing her 6-year-old son’s father is billionaire Francois-Henri Pinault, who is currently married to actress Salma Hayek.

Carla Bruni

Age: 45, height: 5’ 9”, origin: Turin, Italy

Heiress to a tire manufacturing fortune, Bruni left school in Paris to model at 19 and became one of the highest-paid fashion models of the ‘90s, working with many luxe fashion houses, including Christian Dior, Givenchy, and John Galliano. She quit the fashion world in the late ‘90s to start a music career.

After dating a series of famous men, including Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger, she became France’s most fashionable first lady in 2008, when she married then-President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Naomi Campbell

Age: 43, height: 5’ 10”, origin: Streatham, United Kingdom

The first black model to appear on the cover of British Vogue since 1966, Campbell was discovered while studying at the Italia Conti Stage School and went on to walk the biggest runway shows of the ‘90s, including Versace and Isaac Mizrahi. In 1990 she appeared on an iconic British Vogue cover with fellow supermodels Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, and Cindy Crawford, with whom she later walked arm-in-arm in a 1991 Versace show.

Since her modeling heyday, Campbell has been embroiled in several legal suits, most notably pleading guilty for assaulting her former housekeeper in 2007 and two Heathrow Airport police officers in 2008.

Stephanie Seymour

Age: 45, height: 5’ 10”, origin: San Diego, Calif.

Seymour has appeared in dozens of fashion campaigns and runway shows, posing as the face of Christian Dior in 1991 and Valentino in 1992. Famed photographer Herb Ritts shot her photo for the cover of Vogue, which she appeared on again with fellow supermodels Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and Helena Christenson in 1993.

Seymour has had a number of high-profile beaus, including Elite Model Management founder John Casablancas, actor Warren Beatty, and rocker Axl Rose. She married billionaire Peter Brant in 1995, but filed for divorce in 2009. The couple reconciled a year later.

In 2013, Seymour landed a Jason Wu campaign, posing in black lace leggings.

Tyra Banks

Age: 39 Height: 5’ 10” Inglewood, Calif.

Banks started modeling as a teenager and booked 25 runway shows at Paris Fashion Week in 1991. She became a catwalk and editorial favorite, working with esteemed fashion houses like Chanel and Valentino. She was the first black woman to grace the covers of GQ, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, and the Victoria’s Secret catalog.

After modeling as Victoria’s Secret Angel for eight years, Banks broke into the film industry and eventually started her own production company, through which she created "The Tyra Banks Show" and "America’s Next Top Model".
