Madonna's iconic clothes, memorabilia up for auction

An amazing lot of Madonna memorabilia will be on display on Nov. 7 at Julien's Auction House as part of the "Icons and Idols, Rock 'n' Roll Auction." Here's a look at some of the items.

This deep pink satin gown was worn by Madonna in her 1985 music video for "Material Girl." It was inspired by the Travilla gown worn by Marilyn Monroe when she performed “Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend” in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (1953). The gown was originally created for the biopic "Goodbye, Norma Jean," which is based on the life of Monroe, and the dress was later borrowed from the costume house for the Madonna video. The figure-flattering gown has boning in the strapless bodice, gathering in the skirt with a high center back slit, and a large bow lined in black organza attached to the belt. It's accompanied by a pair of pink satin gloves that may have been original to the costume.

"See the Material Girl" music video

This original black-and-white photograph of Madonna was taken by Herb Ritts in 1986 as part of the Madonna Hollywood session. It's marked on the back in pencil, "3396/7."

This pale pink gabardine Rockford Peaches uniform was worn by Madonna in her role as Mae Mordabito (No. 5, center field) in "A League of Their Own" (1992). The uniform has pearlized buttons, a City of Rockford/ Peaches badge, an A-A GPBL patch to the left sleeve, and a "5" applied to the back.

This ivory tulle wedding gown was worn by Madonna while marrying Sean Penn in 1985. The dress features a strapless boned bodice with a sweetheart neckline, ruched tulle embellished with a band of pink metallic mesh layered over handmade ombre blossoms with gold bullion trimming, gold tone beadwork and simulated pearls. The skirt is composed of multiple layers of short tulle over long layers. A label reads "M. Stewart Covers." Marlene Stewart designed costumes for Madonna in the 1980s. It's accompanied by a black bowler hat with tulle veil and imitation pearl details, and custom wedding shoes worn with the gown. The shoes are ivory silk brocade embellished with gold and silver bullion foliate appliqué, imitation pearls, iridescent glass teardrops, tulle, and a petal pink rose bud designed by Di Fabrizio of Los Angeles.

This MTV Video Music Award Moonman trophy was presented in 1997-1998 for Best Video of the Year for Madonna’s "Ray of Light." The Moonman’s flag is absent. It's accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by Madonna's previous manager Angela Becker.

This pair of intentionally distressed Cosmic Wonder jeans was worn by Madonna in the music video for her 2000 cover of Don McLean's "American Pie." The low-rise jeans are embellished with oval patches. A label reads "Cosmic Wonder." The song was an international success and reached number one in many countries. The jeans are accompanied by a copy of a letter of authenticity signed by Madonna's previous manager Angela Becker.

This velvet choker with a floral centerpiece was worn by Madonna in her 2000 "American Pie" video. The choker has a salmon pink velvet strap and a single clasp. There's no maker stamp. It's accompanied by a copy of a letter of authenticity signed by Madonna's previous manager Angela Becker.

This is a sheet of Madonna’s handwritten choreography for concerts, with writing on both sides of a lined sheet of notebook paper. The songs mentioned are Madonna’s early hits, “Lucky Star,” “Burning Up,” “Borderline,” “Like a Virgin,” and two covers, “Tears of A Clown” and “All Right Now.”

This embellished Tracy Watts western hat was worn by Madonna in the 2000 music video for "Music," which was directed by Jonas Åkerlund. The straw hat is embellished with gold tone sequins, beads and pastel-colored faceted glass stones. The video introduced Sacha Baron Cohen's Ali G character to American audiences. "Music" was Madonna's 12th number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 and the longest running number one song on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play in the 2000s, with five weeks in the number one spot.

"Music" video

This charcoal-gray skirt suit with red and black stripes worn by Madonna in her Golden Globe-winning role as Eva Peron in "Evita." The suit comprises a tailored jacket with red and black decorative trim, fabric-covered buttons, and pleats to the peplum and a slender-fitting skirt with a side pleat. The jacket has a Palace Costume label. The skirt has a label that reads "Madonna" and a Palace Costumes label. Costume design by Penny Rose. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards and won one. The dress is one of many "Evita" outfits up for auction.

This Madonna signed check, dated September 10, 1985, number 116, is in the amount of $45 to skin care professional Aida Grey, drawn from an account of the Entertainment Division of Imperial Bank, Beverly Hills.

This Atsuko Kudo couture latex black cat eye mask with satin ribbon ties appeared in the Summer 2014 issue of V magazine, in which Madonna posed with Katy Perry. The magazine spread is titled "Bonding Sessions" and features Perry and Madonna with the photography shot by renowned fashion photographer Steven Klein and fashion chosen by Hollywood costume designer Arianne Phillips.

This original color photograph of Madonna and Martin Burgoyne was taken on a film set or at a studio by French photographer Xavier Martin. Burgoyne was an artist and dancer who collaborated with Madonna on her albums and became a close friend.

This custom-made cropped tuxedo jacket was worn by Madonna and Rosanna Arquette in "Desperately Seeking Susan" (1985). The jacket is important in the film, as the acquisition of it from Madonna's character by Arquette's character causes the mistaken identity that is central to the plot and is also seen in the "Get into the Groove" music video. The jacquard jacket has a gold mosaic motif with black collar, lapels and cuffs woven with a gold lame' pattern and a jet-like button closure. The back of the jacket features a trapunto gold eyelash lame' pyramid with bead embellishment surrounding the top, and a red felt banner with braided trim. The jacked is hand-stenciled with "NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM," which translates to "The new order is dispatched."
