Iraqi army soldiers rest at a checkpoint in Qayara, some 30 miles south of Mosul, Iraq.

ISIS militants have been going door to door in farming communities south of Mosul, ordering people at gunpoint to follow them north into the city and apparently using them as human shields as they retreat from Iraqi forces. Witnesses to the forced evacuation describe scenes of chaos as hundreds of people were driven north across the Ninevah plains and into the heavily-fortified city, where the extremists are believed to be preparing for a climactic showdown.

Displaced Iraqis who recently fled the city of Mosul greet relatives who fled two years ago at the refugee camp in the Khazer area, near the Kurdish checkpoint of Aksi Kalak, some 25 miles east of Irbil, Iraq.

Lise Grande, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Iraq, said the military operations to retake Mosul from ISIS could spark the largest humanitarian crisis in 2016 as the security situation in the area restrains aid agencies' ability to deliver help.
