Charity is very important to Ann. "I think that we have an obligation to do what we can to ease suffering," she said. Over the years, she has supported several causes, including breast cancer research, bringing aid to disaster areas and helping an AIDS orphanage in Botswana.

Here, she's a lady in red at the Heart Truth Fall 2011 fashion show in New York City to raise awareness about the impact of heart disease on women.

Ann has reported extensively fron Darfur, Sudan, traveling there five times to shed light on violence and ethnic cleansing in the area. During her latest trip in 2010, Ann joined George Clooney on a trek through the country as the actor worked to raise awareness of the conflict.

The Dalai Lama sat down with Ann for his first live on-set interview on a morning news show in May 2010. Ann has spoken to the distinguished religious icon three times. Here, he presents her with a gleaming white silk scarf.

During times of crisis, Ann is able to provide insightful, extensive reporting, as she did from Haiti in January 2010. She was one of the first reporters in Haiti after the debilitating earthquake that hit that country. A tweet she sent helped convince the Air Force to allow physicians to land in Haiti to administer aid to the injured. Twitter named her message the No. 1 tweet in 2010.

Not one to shy away from controversy, Ann travelled to Iran for an exclusive interview with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The 2009 interview was his first since Iranian elections and subsequent violent unrest in the country. In the wide-ranging discussion, Ann probed him about Iran’s nuclear program, his thoughts on President Obama and the legitimacy of his own presidency.

How does Ann balance her work and family? By taking time for her passion: photography. Over the years, Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist David Turnley has been a mentor to Ann, helping her develop her talent. "All of us can find peace even in the chaos of our own lives if we can find that one thing we care so much about that it helps us breathe more deeply," Ann explained. "For me, it’s taking pictures."

Ann took part in TODAY’s antics even before she was an official member of the family. In 1992, while anchoring NBC News at Sunrise, she stopped by to wish Bryant Gumbel a happy 44th birthday. Ann went on to anchor Dateline and has subbed in as an anchor on NBC Nightly News.
