Friday is Free Shipping Day! Where do you stand amid news of holiday delays?

Delays are in the air, so be sure to ask questions of retailers and consider paying for priority mailing during the holiday rush.

Today is Free Shipping day, the last holiday shopping day to qualify for free regular shipping with nearly 1,000 retailers. If you’ve been keeping up with the news, however, you know that major shipping companies have been experiencing delivery delays.

According to Satish Jindel, president of ShipMatrix, during the week after CyberMonday, just 91 percent of UPS ground packages were delivered on time (down from 97 percent at the same time last year), while 95 percent of FedEx’s made their scheduled deliver time.

Want your packages to arrive on time? Consider the following tips:

  • Examine your free shipping offer carefully. December 15 was the last recommended day to send standard USPS packages for delivery by Christmas Eve. So, if you’re not being offered a guarantee that your package will make it, consider upgrading to a priority class of package.
  • Consider fulfillment. It’s not just shipping that takes time, Jindel notes. It's actually getting your mail out that takes time. Ask the retailer how long it’ll take for the package to leave the warehouse.
  • Ask for your money back. If your package doesn’t make it on time, ask for your money back either from the shipper directly, or from the retailer you paid for the shipping services.
