Chef notes
Here in the Northeast, apple picking is in full swing. Droves of city dwellers head to the country for a taste of farm life. This weekend trek also includes tasting warm apple cider doughnuts, fresh baked apple pies and of course apple cider. This seasonal sip is a lovely, crisp pour for breakfast or lunch but once spiked and served warm, it becomes the ideal cocktail for fall’s other favorite activity: camping.
Warm cocktails are perfect for hanging out around a campfire and cider is a great vehicle for many spirits including bourbon, rum and vodka. No matter your mixer, I like to top mine with a little whipped cream and caramel, and you’ve got a drinkable dessert that beats any hot apple pie.
Even if you aren’t planning to pitch a tent anytime soon, you can still enjoy this warm apple cider cocktail. Pour a few mugs on any cool fall eve and enjoy it with friends around a backyard fire pit or even just on your porch for a delicious happy hour under the stars.
