Chef notes

This colorful treat is a show stopping party centerpiece that kids — and adults — go crazy for.

Special equipment: Gumball machine template, parchment paper, piping bag and a round icing tip.

Ingredients

White batch
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 6 cups mini marshmallows
  • 4 cups crispy rice cereal
  • 10 drops white food coloring
Red batch
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 4 cups mini marshmallows
  • 6 cups crispy rice cereal
  • 8 drops red food coloring
Decorations
  • 1 can white icing
  • Black food coloring
  • Candy melts (yellow, pink, blue, purple, orange, white and green)

Preparation

Measure 2 cups of white canned icing into a small bowl and add 1 drop of black food coloring. Mix the icing until the gray color is evenly distributed. Fill a piping bag fitted with a round icing tip and set aside.

For the white batch:

Lay the template out on your work surface and cover it with parchment paper.

Melt the butter over low heat until it's 80 percent melted. Stir in marshmallows, and then add in the food coloring. Add the cereal and mix well.

Pour the mixture onto a parchment-covered template. Generously coat your hands with cooking spray. Use both hands to mold it over section 1 of the template and form a dome shape, smoothing the edges until the mixture begins to firm up.

For the red batch:

Melt the butter over low heat until it's 80 percent melted. Stir in marshmallows, and then add in the food coloring. Add the cereal and mix well.

Working one large handful at a time, fill section 2 of the template, making sure to press the mixture into section 1 to adhere the edges.

Fill section 3 of the template with the remainder of the red mixture. Use both hands to form the shape, smoothing the edges until the mixture begins to firm up.

To decorate:

Using the white icing in piping bag fitted with a round icing tip, draw horizontal lines across three-fourths of section 1 of the template. Adhere the candy melts to the horizontal lines of icing.

Using the gray icing in piping bag fitted with a round icing tip, fill in the rectangular box and smooth it out with your fingers to make a flat surface. Then, draw the coin slot, dial and slot.
