Weird world of awards: Surfboards, moonmen and popcorn buckets

Everyone knows the sleek, elegant shape of an Oscar, the winged Emmy, and the charmingly retro gramophone of the Grammy. But other entertainment awards range from the generic (is that a flame? a teardrop? a contact lens?) to the wacky (surfboards, moonmen and popcorn buckets).

As we await Sunday's Golden Globe Awards (their trophy is pretty self-explanatory), here's a look at nearly two dozen award shapes and a bit about their history. And remember: Whatever shape they are, Rita Moreno and Whoopi Goldberg have probably won 'em.

All entertainment awards are secondary to the Oscar. The 8 1/2-pound statuette is officially dubbed the "Academy Award of Merit," but it's been known as the Oscar since the 1930s, though there's a friendly dispute about where the nickname came from. Jennifer Lawrence is seen holding her best actress Oscar for "Silver Linings Playbook" in 2013.
