Comedian Tim Allen was at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour on Monday to promote his new ABC comedy “Last Man Standing,” but he also took a few digs at men’s roles in sitcoms.
When asked why men are always portrayed as losers on these types of shows, the former “Home Improvement” star said it’s because it's “Sitcom 101.”
“As a comedian for so many years I still do a lot of scatological humor, but I’ve risen it to a higher art,” he joked. “When you don’t have material, you go to the lowest denominator.”
As for the beer-drinking male characters who are always in the flannel shirts over a gray T-shirt and have a gorgeous wife, Allen says, “It’s buffoonery. I’m going to go out on a limb and say we’re not going to do that on this show.”
In his new comedy, Allen plays a “manly man” who ends up doing more parenting after his stay-at-home wife (Nancy Travis) goes back to work and quickly gets promoted. As you can see from the press photo, no flannel or gray T-shirt.
