Stevie Nicks' enduring status as a rock 'n' roll icon can be traced as much to her music as to the style that she has brought to the stage with Fleetwood Mac for nearly five decades. As the 66-year-old singer and her band reunite for a new album and tour, let's pay tribute to a woman who decided to go her own way long before boho-chic was a designer term.
The bohemian style popularized by such stars as Sienna Miller, Kate Moss, Nicole Richie, Mary-Kate Olsen, Rachel Zoe and anyone else photographed at Coachella and other music festivals can be traced in some part to Nicks' draped and flowing style of the 1970s.
Certainly she wasn't the only rocker to come out of the '60s and '70s with a hippie aesthetic from which musicians and celebs of the 21st century would draw inspiration. But can't you just hear "Gold Dust Woman" playing while you flip through a Free People catalog nowadays?
The shawl has always been one staple of Nicks' style. In an August article in Nylon, she was quoted about the genesis of that signature garment.
"In 1968, a very handsome boy brought me a poncho from South America," Nicks said. "I knew it was magic and that someday I would copy it in chiffon or leather or beaded material. I realized that wearing a poncho or a long shawl gave me something to work with up on the stage. Big movements, big twirls, you need to be seen from far away. So I made that a big part of my stage clothes. It became totally intertwined in my fashion style."
On Thursday, Nicks and Fleetwood Mac performed live on the TODAY Plaza. Earlier, Lester Holt caught up with the pop culture fixture to discuss her new album, "24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault," and the accompanying Polaroid selfies she took in the late '70s and early '80s.
