Stephen Colbert responds to Twitter backlash: '#CancelColbert — I agree!'

Insults and outrageous comments are a staple on "The Colbert Report," but on Thursday, what some perceived to be a racist joke was tweeted by the show's account. Angry followers quickly called for Comedy Central to take action, resulting in the hashtag #CancelColbert trending on social media. The comedian himself and the network responded to the criticism, Colbert with his usual brand of humor.Co

Comedy Central was quick to point out that its star was not to blame for the tweet.

The offending line that started it all?

"I am willing to show #Asian community I care by introducing the Ching-Chong Ding-Dong Foundation for Sensitivity to Orientals or Whatever." (The tweet has since been deleted.)

As the network pointed out, the joke was taken out of context from a segment that aired on Wednesday's episode. Colbert, in character as his over-the-top conservative, was making fun of Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder and his open letter to fans

In the missive, Snyder wrote in response to complaints about the team's name, "As loyal fans of the Washington Redskins, I want you to know that tomorrow I will announce the creation of the Washington Redskins Original Americans Foundation."

"The Colbert Report" airs Mondays through Thursdays at 11:30 p.m. on Comedy Central.
