On Grammy night, one hat shook the world. Within minutes of producer/singer Pharrell Williams appearing on the red carpet for music's biggest event on Jan. 26, his Vivienne Westwood-designed lid was the talk of the night. Before the evening was out, it had even spawned its own Twitter account. And now, it's up for grabs ... for a price.
Williams announced Thursday that he had put the hat up for auction, with proceeds going to From One Hand to Another, a charity he established to support learning programs for children in at-risk communities. The winner will also receive a certificate of authenticity, according to the eBay listing.
He also had a little fun with the auction in a subsequent tweet, reaching out to Arby's, the fast-food chain that made hay on Grammy night by asking for the hat "back" on Twitter.
As of Friday morning, the bids were past the $10,000 mark. The immediate response to the hat surprised the musician, who tweeted his response.
Whoever ends up purchasing the hat will certainly have a unique conversation piece. The oversized brown headgear resembles a park ranger's hat, and Williams has kept it in the news by turning up at media events and the Academy Awards nominations wearing a $180 gray version.
But not everyone's excited about the sale: The @PharrellHat account quickly responded to news of the auction, and tweeted what might be the last we'll ever hear from the classic chapeau ... at least, on Twitter.
The auction ends March 2.
