Rejoice, "Big Bang Theory" fans: Penny and Leonard are officially engaged!

Yes, after years of dating and four rejected proposals between them, Leonard finally put a ring on it on Thursday's "The Gorilla Dissolution," the penultimate episode of season seven.

(It's been so long in the making, it may as well have taken nine seasons instead of the actual seven.)

Guess Penny really does want to spend the rest of her life telling people how to spell "Hofstadter."

Not that there wasn't some drama first. After the aspiring actress got canned from her role as a bisexual go-go dancer who was transforming into a gorilla (yes, she really was that desperate for work) in "Serial Ape-Ist 2: Monkey See, Monkey Kill," Penny realized it was time to start making serious decisions. You know, like getting hitched.

But the experimental physicist was less than excited by his (very) long-time girlfriend's sudden interest in marrying him, seeing himself as a healthy bran muffin instead of an exciting, diabetes-inducing Pop-Tart. And when he demanded to know what she needed, the heart-melting "awwww!" moment came.

"You, you stupid Pop-Tart!" she declared.

And so, the ring Leonard had carried in his wallet for years made it's grand appearance. (Awwww!)

Within minutes after "Big Bang's" East Coast broadcast, "Penny and Leonard" was trending as fans took to Twitter to express their joy at the long-awaited betrothal.

Although it ended with an Internet-rocking "aw," the romantic event was anti-climactic to start. But hey, at least it didn't happen in the middle of Professor Proton's funeral

Where the not-quite-fairy-tale engagement goes from here, who knows? (Maybe Sheldon and Amy will beat them to the altar! Stranger things have happened on "Big Bang," like Howard marrying a brilliant beauty like Bernadette. Or Raj getting a girlfriend. Or a monkey smoking cigarettes. Or Sheldon voluntarily hugging Leonard. Oh, you get the idea.)

But "Big Bang Theory" will have at least through the 2016-2017 TV season to plan the perfect wedding. (Or breakup.)

"The Big Bang Theory" airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on CBS.
