Friends and family are undoubtedly thrilled. One Direction fans, maybe not so much: The band's Zayn Malik has become engaged to fellow musician Perrie Edwards of British band Little Mix. The engagement was confirmed by Edwards' mother, Debbie Dufty, in the Dorset Echo.
"It's official. I'm over the moon. They really are in love," said Dufty on Wednesday. She said Malik proposed on Aug. 18.
Little Mix, like One Direction, were a group cobbled together for an appearance on Britain's "X Factor," but unlike One Direction, Little Mix won at the end of the series' eighth season.
The couple, both aged 20, appeared at the London premiere of One Direction's "This is Up" 3-D film, which opens in the U.S. on Aug. 30, on Tuesday and sparked discussion when she was shown wearing a diamond ring on her left hand.
The Daily Mail reported that Dufty spoke more about it in a radio interview, noting "It's wonderful becaue Zayn is absolutely gorgeous.... (I)t's absolutely lovely. Perrie loves him to pieces and i'ts perfect."
The couple reportedly began dating in Dec. 2011, after meeting on the "X Factor" set. Malik reportedly has a cartoon version of Edwards tattooed on his arm.
The singers' rep also confirmed the engagement to the Mail, but added, "Any further detail regarding their relationship is private."
