Nick Offerman addresses his missing mustache: It was only a 'tool'

"Parks and Recreation's" Ron Swanson may have been known for his mustache, but for now, the same can't be said of actor Nick Offerman.

Nick Offerman visited TODAY Tuesday morning — at least most of him did.

The mustache that had been a fixture on his upper lip throughout his "Parks and Recreation" run was conspicuously absent, and TODAY anchor Willie Geist had to ask about "the elephant in the room."

Or not in the room, in this case.

"Any chance it's coming back? Will we see it again?" Geist wondered.

"Someday," Offerman said after considering the question. "I'm a character actor, so that was something I used for my character."

And his work as the mustachioed Ron Swanson came to an end when the final "Parks and Rec" episode aired earlier this year.

"That job is over, so that tool is hung up in the toolbox for a while," Offerman explained.

In other words, he's in no hurry to get hairy again.
