“Mad Men” fans still reeling from recent news that the show won’t return until early 2012 can rest assured that the main man behind the production is fighting to ensure the program that comes back is the one they know and love.

In an interview with “Mad Men” fan site Basket of Kisses, executive producer and head writer Matthew Weiner addressed rumors  about the delay.

“There’s been a lot of speculation and misinformation in the press about what is going on,” Weiner said. “I want the fans to know directly from me that I had nothing to do with this delay and it is not about money. I am fighting for the cast and for the show. And I appreciate the kindness and concern of the fans.”

As for the speculation in the press, Weiner confirmed that TheWrap.com had it right concerning the number of cast cuts AMC and Lionsgate wanted him to make before going forward with a new contract — a total of six, with two characters bowing out each season for the next three seasons.

According to Weiner, some of the misinformation circulating has to do with his presumed $30 million paycheck (spread over three seasons).

“First of all, the number that’s been published is not true,” he insisted. “Second of all, I offered to have less money, to save the cast, and to leave the show in the running time that it’s supposed to be. The harder that I’ve fought for the show, the more money that they’ve offered me.”

Contract negotiations between Weiner, AMC and Lionsgate continue.
