"Everyone knows who Macklemore is," Jimmy Fallon said on Monday night's "Tonight Show." "But not many people know who Ryan Lewis is." To prove that point, Fallon sent the Grammy-winning sidekick onto the streets of New York to confront hip-hop fans and ask: Who is Ryan Lewis? What does he do?
With no disguise or trickery, Lewis simply put his lesser-known face in front of fans, asked a few questions and watched as they had no idea who they were talking to.
"Ryan Lewis ... um ... don't really know what he does," one fan said to Lewis. "I know he's like a package deal though. He comes with Macklemore a lot."
"I thought he was a producer," another fan said. "I always see him on stage when Macklemore is performing, and it seems like he's doing something with computers and whatnot. I've got no clue, though."
Even when Lewis held up a picture of himself next to Macklemore, below his own face, fans were slow to realize who they were talking to.
For the record, Lewis is a 26-year-old musician, producer, DJ, and video director for the Seattle-based rap duo. Their 2012 album, "The Heist," was self-released and featured the hits "Thrift Shop," "Same Love" and "Can't Hold Us."
