When Katy Perry married Russell Brand in India last fall, the couple kept things private — refusing to sell photographs of their big day, despite big time offers from a host of magazines.
“The press is just not your friend when it comes to marriage,” Katy Perry told the June 2011 issue of Vanity Fair magazine. “That’s why we didn’t sell the pictures of our wedding, and we got offered millions of dollars for them, millions.”
The pop singer said she wanted to keep her big day with her actor/comedian mate out of the public eye, because it was, after all, their big day, not the world’s.
“It’s the wrong kind of attention. It detracts from the reason why you exist,” Perry explained further of turning down the lucrative offers. “We wanted that moment to ourselves.”
Despite the recent rumors in the British press suggesting a rift between the couple, Perry told the mag that “Arthur” star Brand keeps her grounded as a person and in her career.
“My husband always reminds me to keep the core intact, because that’s what matters. I just think I have to appreciate every day, every opportunity, work hard, and continue to evolve as an artist,” she said.
As for her career, Perry is currently touring in support of her second album, “Teenage Dream,” and riding high atop hits like “Firework” and her latest single, “E.T.,” but she told the mag she has a long way to go.
“My career is like an artichoke. People might think that the leaves are tasty and buttered up and delicious, and they don’t even know that there’s something magical hidden at the base of it,” she said. “I think that eventually, (with me), you’ll see more layers. There’s a whole other side that people didn’t know existed.”
