Jesse Tyler Ferguson is tying the knot ... literally. The “Modern Family” actor recently proposed to partner Justin Mikita and while they aren’t revealing the big date just yet, the duo does have their wedding day wardrobe figured out.

Ferguson and Mikita will be sporting Tie the Knot bow ties, of their own design, when they say “I do” in New York City.

But the pair won’t be the only ones benefiting from their new fashion foray. They’ve partnered with Tie the Knot to design 20 different limited edition styles of the neck accessory. The proceeds of their fall/winter 2012 creations will be donated to the Human Rights Campaign in support of marriage equality.

This is Ferguson’s first attempt at fashion design, and the actor tells The Clicker he and Mikita drew inspiration for their designs from everyday items.

“We started looking around our house at things we loved,” Ferguson said. “A bandana, fabric on a chair, I was inspired by a book of Scottish tartans my grandma gave me before she passed away. We threw a little bit of everything against the wall and came up with 20 designs plus a 21st that is a black-tie bow tie specifically for weddings.”

Though he admits he didn’t have much use for the tiny fashion staples until landing his role as Mitchell Pritchett on “Modern Family,” Ferguson has now become something of a bow tie aficionado, sporting them to the Golden Globes and on red carpets. He’s also working to get the line featured on his ABC hit.

“I don’t see Mitch wearing them in casual settings but I could see him putting on a bow tie to go to work or to a formal event like a wedding,” Ferguson said, adding, “I could also see Cam [Eric Stonestreet] in one and even Luke [Nolan Gould].”

He and Mikita are hoping to come out with additional collections of the $25 accessory and potentially expand into other wedding-themed items in the future.

“We’re thinking about doing a line of wedding invites and have reached out to a few companies to discuss that possibility. We want to do something where, again, all the proceeds would go towards supporting marriage equality so we like the idea of keeping it within the wedding theme," he said, adding wedding bands or neckties for women could also be possibilities down the designing line.

While they just missed this election cycle, Ferguson plans to contribute Tie the Knot proceeds to the next.

“Hopefully four years down the road, equal marriage rights have already been nationalized, but if there are states on the ballots, we’d love to give money to the right causes."

For now, they’ll be selling 200 of each tie design via thetiebar.com on Nov. 15.

“We wanted to make sure they’re unique,” the actor said. “People will be able to get them if they want them, but they won’t be mass produced.”
