It's a girl for George Lucas and wife

"Star Wars" creator George Lucas and wife Mellody Hobson welcomed a baby girl, Everest Hobson Lucas, via gestational surrogate on Aug. 9.

Lucas, 69, and Hobson, 44, wed at the director's Skywalker Ranch in northern California in June. She is president of Ariel Investments and chairman of the board of DreamWorks Animation SKG, as well as a contributor to CBS.

Everest has three much older siblings, Amanda, 32; Katie, 25; and Jett, 20, all of whom have appeared in the "Star Wars" films.

Late-night talk-show host Jimmy Fallon and wife Nancy Juvonen also welcomed a baby girl via gestational surrogate in recent weeks. Baby Winnie Rose Fallon was born on July 23.

"My wife and I had been trying a while to have a baby," Fallon told Savannah Guthrie on TODAY. "We tried a bunch of things – so we had a surrogate."

Statistics from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine show that births via gestational surrogacy have been steadily increasing since 2004. In 2011, there were 1,593 babies born via gestational surrogacy.
