YouTube captures 48 hours of video every minute, so getting any attention for a homemade cover of LMFAO's "Sexy And I Know It" -- done on acoustic guitar -- is no small feat. So when Noah Guthrie posted his video last week, he never expected to wake up the next morning with 200,000 hits. In the short time since then, the South Carolina high schooler (who goes by just "Noah") has racked up more than 2.5 million hits on the song, and he joined TODAY's Ann Curry and Matt Lauer on Monday to chat about becoming the latest YouTube sensation.
"Surreal," he said when asked how it all feels. "I don't even know how to describe it."
Guthrie is not quite just a basement rocker; he's self-taught on the acoustic and as a singer (his voice is raspy and bluesy, reminiscent of John Mayer and John Popper) and he's been making a name for himself around his hometown by playing small shows, and even has a management contract. He posts videos of himself doing cover versions of songs he likes just about every week, and has some big plans: "I'm trying to finish up my original album soon," he said. "I don't have a date, but it is coming."
Still, becoming an overnight success with a cover is a nice pre-high school graduation present. "I am just very blessed," he said. "Very blessed with my situation and everything."
Here's the original video that sparked it all:
