Color us shocked! Now that MTV's cameras are no longer following their every move, Spencer and Heidi Pratt admit to Us Weekly that much of their onscreen drama on "The Hills" -- the feuds, the fights, the villainy -- wasn't real.

"I was hell-bent on being the bad-guy character on the show," Spencer, 29, tells Us. "I got caught up in it."

His wife of three years Heidi, 26, confirms the proceedings were less than genuine. "Spencer and I never fight like that. Never," says Heidi, who recently "changed my last name to Pratt, so that's the biggest thing in my life."

Spencer is currently focused on getting his University of Southern California political science degree, not to mention making do with less money.

"I'm turning down paid appearances. We don't have celebrity-sized money anymore, but we're fine," he tells Us. "I'm happy to be around normal people these days!"
