“Fashion should be fun,” says Rancic, who regularly appears on red carpets herself. “It’s fun to change up your look; it’s fun to try new things. And what’s great about fashion, unlike changing your hair or getting a tattoo, if you don’t like the way it looks, you can correct it in five seconds or less.”
It’s Rancic’s job to comment on those celebrities who didn’t have time to rethink a wardrobe change before stepping out in front of paparazzi cameras. But criticizing fashion faux pas doesn’t mean she’s making enemies in Hollywood.
“People say to me, ‘Oh, are you afraid that people are going to hear that you put them on worst-dressed [lists] on Fashion Police?” the reality star says. “I think, gosh, no. These celebrities have a lot more going on in their lives to worry about than what people are saying about their coat, you know? And that is how I feel, too.”
In fact, Rancic has found herself on a few worst-dressed lists—and, she admits, she loves it! “I think it’s hilarious!” she says. “I do. I talk about it all the time. I’ll circulate it. Or I’ll tweet it, even. Also, to do a show like Fashion Police, and being on the red carpet talking about fashion all the time, if you’re going to dish it, you need to be able to take it, too. I think that’s a big part of the job: being able to take it.”
How does she find it so easy to brush off the unflattering commentary? “I always say, to be a true fashionista, you have to be on the best-dressed list and the worst-dressed list, because it means you’re taking chances,” Rancic explains. “If you’re always only on the best-dressed list, you’re not having fun. You’re not taking chances. You’re not trying new things.”
The biggest risk Rancic recently took was cutting her lovely long hair—and it totally paid off. “One day I woke up and looked in the mirror and it just didn’t feel right to me anymore,” Rancic says of the old style. “I felt like I evolved from that long, beachy, wavy blond hair. And I was just over it. I think being a mom and having a kid probably had a little to do with it. It’s nice to have a hair style that allows me to be with Duke longer. Having a short haircut saves 30 minutes to blow dry. It’s great and it’s easy and I’m really liking it!”
