“American Idol’s” former sentimental favorite Chris Medina introduced to world to his fiancée, Juliana Ramos, during a memorable and emotional audition. At the time, he shared the story of their romance and the tragic turn it took when a car accident left Ramos with a severe brain injury. He also shared his personal devotion to her, as a caretaker and a partner. What Medina didn’t share were his concerns about their future together.
Until now, that is. In an open and frank interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Medina revealed his best hopes and worst fears for his relationship with Ramos.
“I sure hope (we get married one day), that's the goal,” Medina explained. “I've already told myself that it's okay that she's in a wheelchair. It doesn't mean anything to me. It's okay if she has a hard time speaking. What's not okay is if in a couple years, she’s not 100% and we can’t have a conversation with each other, because that's the essence of a relationship. I don't mind helping her into her car, but I don't want to be feeding her or taking her to the bathroom everyday from this day forward. I want her to become somewhat independent.”
The 26-year-old realizes some fans who’ve admired him for standing my his fiancée’s side may not understand his need to see such progress from Ramos before marriage, but Medina is simply sharing his honest thoughts about a situation most will never have to face.
“Those are more my own personal issues and I know that it might be rough for a lot of people to hear, but that's the truth of the matter,” the singer said. “To me, Juliana is still beautiful, but I want to be able to sit down and have a meaningful conversation with my wife… I want to get to a point where I feel less like a caretaker and more like a fiancé. But to say, ‘We're not going to get married until you get better’ is unfair to her, too. So the only thing I say is: ‘Babe, if you keep trying, I'll keep trying.’ And that's the truth.”
Medina will appear on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” Friday to perform “What Are Words,” a newly-recorded song inspired by his relationship with Ramos.
