We're turning back the clock — and our television sets — 20 years to relive the magic of the 48th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards broadcast.
In 1996, Princess Diana and Prince Charles became officially divorced. Madonna became a mom. Audiences flocked to see Will Smith in "Independence Day, and the country re-elected Bill Clinton as president.
Of course, the real action was on TV. Before tuning in to the Emmys this Sunday, let's take a look back at highlights from the 1996 Emmys ceremony.
1. A big year for Oprah
Winfrey was one of the ceremony's three hosts — along with Michael J. Fox and "Mad About You" star Paul Reiser. That year, the Queen of All Media won her bajillionth Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show, and launched a legendary book club that's still going strong today.
2. Primetime (and longtime) love
Michael J. Fox and his wife, Tracy Pollan, looked elegant as they walked the red carpet. The couple, who married in 1988 and have four children, met on the set of the actor's iconic comedy show "Family Ties."
3. The one with the injured friend
All six "Friends" cast members, including an injured Matt LeBlanc (sporting a seriously swaggy cast!), showed up for their second time at the Emmys. The show nabbed its first win that year — an award for directing.
4. Helen Mirren's "outfit store" glamour
A decade before she'd nab an Oscar for "The Queen," Mirren won the first of many Emmy awards for her performance as a police detective on the PBS series "Prime Suspect IV: Scent of Darkness."
Backstage Mirren, who wore a red dress and gold-patterned wrap, told reporters, "You know, with these beautiful gowns, I was sitting there thinking, 'Oh god, it's so typical that I'm in a sort of outfit store dress."
5. Julia Louis-Dreyfus' kiss
The fifth time's the charm! Over the years, "Seinfeld" star Louis-Dreyfus was nominated seven times for her portrayal of kooky Elaine Benes. In 1996, her fifth time up at bat, she won. The star, dressed in a chic, sparkly lime gown celebrated by giving her award a lil' smooch.
6. Buddies in the "ER"
"ER" stars George Clooney, left, and Anthony Edwards were all smiles as they walked the red carpet, but inside, while presenting, Clooney ribbed Edwards for his all-black ensemble. "(Famous mimes) Shields and Yarnell called. They want their whole outfit back," Clooney quipped.
7. Sci-fi black tie
"X-Files" co-stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny looked hip and stylish together. Anderson, who wore her hair in dramatic curls, was nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama category, but lost to "Picket Fences" star Kathy Baker. (Next year, Scully! Trust us.)

8. A solo Ellen
Ellen DeGeneres was nominated for her role on her namesake comedy "Ellen." The comedian would change the face of primetime TV the following year by having her character come out as lesbian to her therapist, played by Oprah Winfrey, just two months after the actress came out in real life on "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

9. "Frasier" stars' fancy footwork
"Frasier" beat out "Friends," "Seinfeld," "The Larry Sanders Show," and "Mad About You" to nab Outstanding Comedy Series honors for the third year in a row. Onstage, the show's stars David Hyde Pierce and Jane Leeves showed off their tango moves.
