Ellie Goulding didn't write new song for 'Divergent,' but it was 'perfect' for film
The producers and director of "Divergent" have called singer Ellie Goulding the "musical voice" of the dystopian drama, but when she wrote the first single from the film's soundtrack, "Beating Heart," she had no idea that's what she would become.

"I had the song, and I'd performed it and recorded it," she explained to TODAY's Matt Lauer. "I didn't know they were going to use it for the film. But actually, once I ... thought about it, I thought it was kind of perfect, kind of really suited the whole sort of theme."
Goulding performed the song on TODAY early Wednesday morning, and arrived even earlier to rehearse for it. Lauer said he'd give Goulding a "gold star" for that, considering that her Wednesday night plans include playing at Madison Square Garden.
