She's been a "Tomb Raider," a "Salt"-y spy & more - but Angelina Jolie could be heading for the Egyptian throne with her latest role.

According to USA Today, producer Scott Rudin is developing a film based on the biography "Cleopatra: A Life" "for and with Jolie."

Publisher Little, Brown confirmed that Rudin had bought the rights to the book, USA Today reported.

The movie would find her following in the legendary footsteps of Elizabeth Taylor, who played the title role in 1963's "Cleopatra" opposite Richard Burton and Rex Harrison. The historical queen's dramatic rulership and love affairs have inspired many an adaptation, including William Shakespeare's tragedy "Antony and Cleopatra."

Should Angelina take the role, it won't be the first time the actress has sat on the throne - she played Queen Olympias in 2004's "Alexander."

The star's next film, "Salt," is due July 23. She'll star alongside Johnny Depp in 2011's "The Tourist."

The Jolie project isn't the only Cleopatra film to make headlines in recent years - in 2008, Steven Soderbergh reportedly began developing "Cleo," a 3-D rock musical version of the Egyptian pharaoh's story with Catherine Zeta-Jones in mind for the title role. Updates have been scarce since, however, and the film seems to have fallen by the wayside.
