If there's one rule of Hollywood most of us unfamous people know, it's that you have to be pretty to make it on-screen there. Not just regular pretty, either, but rather glamorous and gorgeous. But Oscar winner Charlize Theron sees it differently, as she told GQ in an interview that's making many roll their eyes.
"Jobs with real gravitas go to people that are physically right for them and that's the end of the story," she said in the interview, which appears in the May 2016 issue of the magazine.
"How many roles are out there for the gorgeous... gown-wearing eight-foot model? When meaty roles come through, I’ve been in the room and pretty people get turned away first."
OK, let's unpack that. First, we can generally agree that Theron, 40, is a genuinely gorgeous woman. Second, she hardly seems to have hurt for roles herself: she's appeared in at least one movie every year (barring 2013) since 1995. Third, she won her Oscar in 2003 for "Monster," in which she wore copious makeup and prosthetics to downgrade her looks to fit that of her character. Fourth, how many gorgeous, 8-feet-tall models out there are looking for work? (Theron herself is 5-foot-10-inches.)

But we're not the only ones casting a skeptical eye on Theron's remarks. Fans and celebrities alike are calling her out on social media, starting with "Welcome to the Dollhouse's" Heather Matarazzo, who linked to Variety's story about Theron's comment and sent out this tweet:
Now, we're not saying Theron has no idea what she's talking about, since she has over 20 years in the business. But in light of the recent Twitter account of a Hollywood producer who tweeted dozens of ways women are described in movie scripts ("beautiful" comes up nearly all the time) and insights from those in the casting industry itself ("She was excellent ... not beautiful enough") we're going to have to give a little side-eye to the "Mad Max: Fury Road actress."

Who really, is always going to be talented and beautiful enough to have any role she desires.
