The many star-studded breakups of 2015 led us to muse that love was dead, but that was before we witnessed the celebrity splits in 2016.
As it turns out, this is the year we said really RIP to romance!
1. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
Breakups just don't get bigger than the end of Brangelina. In September, Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt after 11 years together — two as a married couple — in a move that shocked fans and A-list friends alike.
The actress is said to be seeking physical custody of their six children — Maddox, 15, Pax, 13, Shiloh, 10, Zahara, 11, and 8-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne — and in a statement from one of her lawyers, explained that the split was made "for the health of the family."
In his own statement, Pitt said, "I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now in the wellbeing of our kids."
2. Johnny Depp and Amber Heard
Just 15 months after swapping vows — and 13 months after some major doggy drama Down Under — Depp and Heard parted ways.
Heard filed for divorce and was granted a temporary restraining order from Depp in May, following abuse allegations against the actor.
The pair settled their divorce in August, issuing a joint statement explaining that their "relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love."
3. Mariah Carey and James Packer
The year was barely underway when the "All I Want For Christmas Is You" singer said yes to a proposal from billionaire businessman Packer. But before the year was out, they said so long to each other.
During a recent appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," Carey referred to their breakup as "a whole friggen thing," adding, "Everything happens for a reason."
4. Drew Barrymore and Will Koppelman
After three years of marriage, Barrymore and Koppelman parted ways in the spring.
The actress and the art consultant have two daughters — Olive, 4, and Frankie, 2. In a joint statement, the couple said, "Sadly our family is separating legally, although we do not feel this takes away from us being a family. Divorce might make one feel like a failure, but eventually you start to find grace in the idea that life goes on."
5. Marc Anthony and Shannon De Lima
One day after Anthony shared a kiss with ex-wife Jennifer Lopez onstage at the 17th annual Latin Grammy Awards on Nov. 18, came reports that he and wife De Lima have gone their separate ways.
While the singer hasn't commented on the break, actress Leah Remini, who's a close friend to both Anthony and Lopez, insisted that the smooch between the exes had nothing to do with the breakup.
“Absolutely not, that is not the reason,” Remini said during a sitdown with Andy Cohen on "Watch What Happens Live." “Marc’s separation had happened already, clearly way before that."
6. Jennifer Lopez and Casper Smart
Lopez's ex-husband wasn't the only one to find himself suddenly single again in 2016.
The singer, actress and producer had been in an on-again, off-again relationship with former backup dancer Smart since 2011, and according to various reports, they've been off-again again since August.
While J.Lo and Smart have remained mum about the break, there have been hints on social media.
7. Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris
Swift and Harris dated for 15 months before revealing their relationship was over in June.
At first it seemed the singer and the Scottish DJ parted without any bad blood at all, with Harris tweeting, "The only truth here is that a relationship came to an end & what remains is a huge amount of love and respect."
But that message, along with other social media posts from both of them, was later deleted.
8. Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston
Harris isn't the only one likely to earn some blind-item mentions on Swift's next album. Just two weeks after Swift and Harris announced their breakup, she was spotted in the arms (and on the lips) of "Thor" star Hiddleston.
But it wasn't long before their whirlwind romance whirled to an end, too. By September, the summer lovin' was over.
9.Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney
In 2015, Lady Gaga and the "Chicago Fire" star announced their engagement. In 2016, they announced their split.
Gaga and Kinney began dating in 2011, and by all reports, their parting has been an amicable one — and in one post on Instagram, the "Perfect Illusion" singer hinted that it could be a temporary one, too.
10. Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts
After 11 years together, Watts and Schreiber called in quits in September, stating, "Over the past few months we've come to the conclusion that the best way forward for us as a family is to separate as a couple."
The acting exes are parents to two sons — Sasha, 9, and Samuel, 7 — and they've remain close, even sharing sweet birthday wishes to each other on social media after their break.
11. Dennis Quaid and Kimberly Buffington-Quaid
On June 28, Quaid and Buffington-Quaid announced their plans to divorce — and it wasn't the first time they'd made such an announcement since their 2004 nuptials.
Buffington-Quaid first filed for divorce from the actor back in March of 2012, before withdrawing her petition just two months later. Later that same year, she filed for legal separation. They reconciled in 2013.
12. Christie Brinkley and John Mellencamp
The model and the rocker dated for a year before ending their romance in August.
"Both the mileage between their homes and their heavy career demands interfered with their ability to maintain the relationship," a rep for the former couple told E! News on their behalf, adding that they have "vowed to remain best of friends."
13. Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama
Another pair promised to remain best pals after parting ways this year — Lovato and Valderrama. After dating for almost six years, they announced their split over the summer.
"This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more than anything that we are better as best friends," a statement from the couple read. "We will always be supportive of one another."
14. Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson
The partnership between the "The Bridge" actress and the "Dawson's Creek" alum lasted for 10 years before their split in July.
While the stars haven't spoken out about the end of their relationship, just one day after reps confirmed the news, Kruger shared a message of hope on Instagram.
15. Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Meyer
Maguire married jewelry designer Meyer in 2007, and nine years later, they announced their separation.
They have two children, daughter Ruby, 10, and son Otis, 7.
“After much soul searching and consideration we have made the decision to separate as a couple,” Maguire and Meyer told People. "As devoted parents, our first priority remains raising our children together with enduring love, respect and friendship.”
16. Hilary Swank and Ruben Torres
The Oscar-winning actress began dating the former tennis pro in 2015, and she announced their engagement via social media in March of 2016 — but the wedding plans didn't get far.
Just three months after Swank tweeted the happy news, she deleted her posts — and her ring.
17. Kirsten Dunst and Garrett Hedlund
A year ago Dunst declared that boyfriend Hedlund felt "like family" to her, but now it seems there's a rift in the family.
The pair parted ways in April, after four years together.
18. Ryan Phillippe and Paulina Slagter
Phillippe and his law student fiancé separated in November, according to reports.
They were together for five years and engaged last December.
19. Nicolas Cage and Alice Kim
Cage and Kim separated in January, just six months before what would have been their 12th wedding anniversary.
The couple had one child together, 11-year-old son Kal-El.
This was the actor's third marriage. He was previously wed to actress Patricia Arquette and singer Lisa Marie Presley.
