When Carrie Underwood found out she and husband Mike Fisher had a little one on the way, she found a creative way to share the news with fans — via doggie t-shirts. And when it was time for Underwood and Fisher to find out whether they were expecting a boy or a girl, she got creative again.

The country singer knew a sonogram would reveal the baby's sex, but she decided she didn't want to find out in "kind of a sterile place."

"We got to see all the pictures and everything [during the sonogram]," she told ABC News Radio. "It was really cool to see that, but whenever [the doctor would] get near, near those parts, we would look away."

What's a curious parent-to-be to do then? Make a special request.

Underwood asked her doctor to write down the big news so she and her hubby could open the envelope at a more opportune moment.

"[It was] just the two of us in a nicer setting," she said of their subsequent night out, "but we both knew."

The doctor's note merely confirmed what they had long suspected.

"We didn't really speak of it before, 'cause we were both just like, 'Whatever. It's all good,'" Underwood explained. "But we knew it was a boy."

It wasn't long before everyone else knew, too.

Underwood's Country Music Awards co-host, Brad Paisley, took care of that.

Paisley even picked out a name: Garth.
