Adam Levine is something of a lightning rod for attention. Sure, he has lots of fans from his gig on NBC's "The Voice" and as frontman for Maroon 5 (and he's bound to gain more from his co-starring role in the new film "Begin Again"). But Levine is not without his detractors — and they didn't hold back when he recently bleached his dark hair blond.
"No one liked it, which I kind of dug," the now-dark-haired Levine told TODAY Wednesday of the platinum mane he debuted on Instagram in May. At the time, Levine defended his new look, declaring backstage at "The Voice" that he didn't care what anyone thought.

Still, the public outcry rankled, Levine admitted. "It was a little confusing and upsetting," he continued on TODAY before performing "Maps" with Maroon 5. "Now I'm back."
"Begin Again" opens in theaters June 27; Maroon 5's new album "V" will be released Sept. 2.
