Actor Ashton Kutcher is set to fill the “Two and a Half Men” void that Charlie Sheen left when the next season of the CBS comedy kicks off, but how long he gets to do that remains to be seen.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the bigwigs behind “Men” signed Kutcher to a short, one-year contract, meaning his first season could also be his last.

Then again, the ninth season of “Men” could be the last for everyone involved, as insiders explained that CBS only licensed the program for one more year. If the network extents the agreement further, it would be an opportunity for either a new contract or a parting of the ways between Warner Bros. and Kutcher.

Regardless of the negotiations still to come, insiders told the Journal that both CBS and Warner Bros. hope to see two or three more seasons from the sitcom staple.

Warner Bros. TV CEO Peter Roth spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about Kutcher’s future with “Men,” but he remained mum on the details.

“The specifics are literally still being worked out,” Roth said. “This is such a dynamic process that I’m sure (executive producer) Chuck (Lorre) will have a number of different thoughts and will write towards the extraordinary strengths of Ashton as we go through the process. What I can tell you is that we’re very excited about Ashton’s presence in the show.”
