In "Les Miserables," Anne Hathway had to bare her head and her soul, but before she and TODAY's Matt Lauer got around to talking about those experiences on Wednesday, he asked her about accidentally baring something else at the New York premiere of the film.
It appeared that she got some of her first photos taken as she exited her car on Monday -- sans underwear, and Hathaway had a very eloquent response to the question of her "wardrobe malfunction."
"It was obviously an unfortunate incident," she said. "It kind of made me sad on two accounts. One was that I was very sad that we live in an age when someone takes a picture of another person in a vulnerable moment and rather than delete it, and do the decent thing, sells it. And I’m sorry that we live in a culture that commodifies sexuality of unwilling participants, which brings us back to 'Les Mis,' that's what my character is, she is someone who is forced to sell sex to benefit her child because she has nothing and there's no social safety net."
Well said. Lauer and Hathaway went on to talk about the film, in which she has a small but pivotal role that required her to have her hair cut off, and lose 25 pounds so she could appear on the edge of death.
"It was scary," she admitted about losing her hair, particularly because it wasn't something she could prepare for. "There was nothing to do except just let it happen."
But while she has spoken in the past about how she lost the weight, Hathaway remained mum on TODAY -- but with a good, thoughtful reason. "I get nervous talking about it because I find that I don’t want to be seen as trying to glamorize it and there’s a lot of talk and a lot of pressure especially in young girls to lose weight, and ... I didn't do it to get hot, I did it to look like I was dying. Do not try this at home."
"Les Miserables" opens in theaters on Dec. 25.
