"American Horror Story's" third season players are starting to take shape: Frances Conroy and Taissa Farmiga have been added to the ranks of the cast.

Co-creator Ryan Murphy took to Twitter on Thursday to reveal that Conroy would return for the mysterious third season. Meanwhile, Farmiga will come back to the anthology after sitting out its sophomore frame.

"Thrilled to announce the legendary Frances Conroy is on board for next season's 'American Horror Story,' " Murphy tweeted.

Conroy becomes the fourth cast member poised to have appeared in all three installments of the FX horror series, joining returning players Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson and Lily Rabe. During "Asylum," she had a recurring role as the Angel of Death.

For her part, season one breakout Farmiga will return to join her former co-star Peters after Murphy told reporters he missed the romance element to the series that the duo made headlines with in season one.

"What season three is about is more historical in nature," he teased. "I'm also interested in getting into a horror romance. That's certainly something that's going to be in the water for season three. You're going to see a very different tone in season three, but that's the joy of the show. I think as a person right now I do feel lighter and wanting to embrace something a little bit more fun."

Murphy hinted that additional season one cast members could be returning to the drama, which has featured multiple actors returning to play characters completely different than seasons prior. "I like that idea. I know that those actors are interested in that," he said.

Details about next season -- including its likely subtitle -- are again being kept under wraps, but Murphy confirmed that it would be a modern-day story revolving around Lange. "We do have a great icon, and it's a woman," he said, noting that the show again would be inspired by things that he's personally interested in.
